Matt Filer officially began work on OpenCAGE mod tools for Alien: Isolation nine years ago, following two and a half years of prototype development. The tools have now reached version 1.0 and are available for download on Steam.

The 1.0 release enables creators to implement full custom maps, missions, modes, characters, weapons, animations, sounds, models, and textures. Filer says the tools have reached the point where total conversion mods are possible, which was always his end goal.

As a demonstration, Filer is creating a Halo-themed custom map that features custom cinematics, enemies, weapons, a new map, and a custom HUD. The mod tools have been available throughout development, which has already led to various mods for Creative Assembly's horror game.

Alien: Isolation recently won a scariest videogame poll. A sequel is expected to release in 2027.
