The Japanese anime market reached 4.44 trillion yen in 2025, equivalent to over 28 billion dollars, according to the Association of Japanese Animations. The figure represents a 16 percent increase from the previous year and marks the first time the market exceeded 4 trillion yen.

The rate of growth was also a record, with the association reporting 15.8 percent year-over-year expansion. This surpassed the 15.7 percent growth rate posted in 2024.

Overseas revenue climbed 17 percent to more than 16 billion dollars, accounting for approximately 60 percent of the total market. The domestic market grew 14 percent to over 12 billion dollars.

The 2025 results broke a longstanding pattern where sluggish home market performance sat alongside rapid overseas growth. Both domestic and international markets showed strong expansion, with overseas revenue first overtaking local revenue in 2023.
