Microsoft is decoupling its cloud gaming service from Game Pass and introducing a pay-as-you-go model called Xbox Cloud Playtime. Starting today, Xbox Insiders can stream games without a Game Pass subscription by purchasing hourly playtime packs.

The program is expected to roll out more broadly in November. Players can buy cloud playtime starting at $0.40 per hour, with packages of 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99.

These cloud playtime packs include ad-free streaming, shorter wait times, high-quality streaming, and playtime that remains available until used. Xbox is also offering an ad-supported streaming tier for players who want to try the service or are less concerned about connection quality and interruptions.

The new model comes as Xbox has started limiting the number of hours existing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can stream each month. Game Pass Ultimate currently costs $23 per month and caps streaming at 15 hours, though it offers instant access to hundreds of games rather than requiring players to already own them.
