Sony will stop producing PS5 discs in January 2028
An analyst says the backlash comes from a vocal minority of a revenue minority, though they spend significant money on PlayStation.
Sony will cease production on new discs for PlayStation consoles in January 2028. The announcement has drawn fervent outcry from studios and fans across the industry.
Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, examined sales data showing physical disc sales vary widely by game type. Single-player titles like Resident Evil: Requiem and Marvel's Wolverine saw just over 30% and over 32% physical sales respectively on PS5, while Pragmata and Onimusha: The Way of the Sword exceeded 40%.
Multiplayer and sports games tell a different story. FC 27, Madden 27 and MLB The Show 26 all came in below 10% physical sales on PS5, indicating sports fans and live-service players buy almost entirely digital.
Elliott notes producing discs requires an expensive pipeline from manufacturing through to final purchase, while digital negates those costs on a marketplace Sony controls. He writes the backlash is mostly a vocal minority of a revenue minority, but adds it is a minority that really matters and spends a lot of money on PlayStation.
