John Romero's cancelled Xbox FPS gets new publisher, studio rehires 10 staff
Romero Games secured a new publisher for its axed shooter project and brought back 10 lead developers after the team was reduced from 110 to five people.
John Romero confirms his studio's FPS project has a new publisher after Xbox cancelled it in 2025. Romero Games announced the original IP shooter in 2022 before Microsoft pulled funding during company-wide layoffs.
The studio kept staff as long as possible while seeking new funding but eventually reduced the team from 110 people to five. Romero Games has now rehired 10 developers who were leads of different sub-teams.
The game is being completely redesigned for the smaller team size. Romero says the studio cannot finish the original 110-person game but the new version uses art, weapons and other work from the previous project.
Romero says the team is scoped appropriately for 15 people and the studio is happy with the arrangement. He cannot reveal the new publisher's identity.
